    Apply for Coaches' Passes

    A coach's pass can be issued for every 10 registered students.

    To apply for a coach's pass, send email to hbdschallenge.info@gmail.com by 5/10/2017 with

    • Coach's Name
    • Desired Session (Day or Evening) -
      must have at least one student in that session
    • List of 10 registered students -
      competitors may only be registered with one studio/coach

    Studio/school account balance must be clear before pass is issued. Coaches' passes can be picked up at registration and are only good for the Name and Session on the pass.

    Top Studio Awards

    Top Studio is awarded based on total number of entries dances and total points accrued during the challenge.

    • First place: $1000 (minimum 275 entries to qualify)
    • Second place: $500 (minimum 225 entries to qualify)
    • Third place: $300 (minimum 175 entries to qualify)

    Entries include any single dance, multi-dance event, solo performance, formation or team performance in all categories (no junior or adult separation).

    Professional Division Registration Credit

    For Professionals participating in Teacher/Student events

    The registration fee for the Professional Division will be credited back to the Professional couples who dance with their students for a combined total of 20 ProAm entries.


    Studio/school account balance must be clear before credit issued.

  • Competition Rules

    Hot Ballroom DanceSport Challenge is a USA Dance Registered Event.

    Competition rules for Ballroom Standard, Latin, Smooth and Rhythm Styles

    The USA Dance Rulebook will be used a guideline but deviations may be made by the organizers.


    Participants in Junior National Qualifying Event must be a DanceSport member of USA Dance. Other amateur competitors must be either a recreational/social or DanceSport/Athlete member of USA Dance.


    Dress code per USA Dance rules but adult competitors may wear costumes.






    Competition Rules for Caribbean Division

    Salsa, Bachata, and Merengue

    We offer Amateur and Teacher/Student single dance competition in each of the Caribbean dances (Salsa, Bachata, and Merengue) in Juvenile (0-11), Jr Youth (12 - 18), and Open (16+). In addition, Novice and Open Caribbean Multidance events will also be offered.

    The USA Dance Rulebook will be used a guideline but deviations may be made by the organizers.


    First place - $500

    Second place - $400

    Third place - $300

    Fourth place - $200

    Fifth place - $150

    Sixth place - $100


    Competition Rules for Teams and Show Dances

    Teams & Volunteer Judges

    Participants- There must be a minimum of 2 dancers for Solo showcase. 3-7 dancers for Small Team, minimum of 8 dancers for Team and there is no maximum for Team.

    The Westin Long Beach is an entirely smoke free facility.

    Admission Reminder

    As a matter of security during the competition, no one will be admitted to the ballroom without an admission hand stamp. Be sure you maintain the stamp for re-admission purposes. We ask you to respect this rule and cooperation with our door monitors since they are enforcing for your safety.

    On Deck System

    During the competition, the On Deck system will be used to organize participants. Competitors must report to the designated deck area three heats prior to their own to ensure inclusion in the line up. Competitors MUST be in the ballroom in full costume and ready to dance at least 30 minutes before their scheduled heats. Any competitor not present when called to the floor for their heat will be dropped. We request everyone’s cooperation with the deck captain in lining up in the correct order. Only competitors and officials are permitted in the On Deck area.

    Photography and Videography

    Photography and videography are allowed; however, unless you are the official registered photographer, you must take pictures and videos only while sitting in your seat. Please be courteous and do no obstruct anyone’s view of the dancing. There will be no photographing or videoing from the edge of the dance floor or aisles. Flash photography is not allowed unless by the official photographer. Unipods, bipods, and tripods are not to be used at one’s seat. Only 6″ or smaller lenses will be allowed to avoid obstructing one’s neighbor’s view. All pictures and videos are for one’s personal use only and are not for commercial use or sale without express permission of the organizer. Monitors will be on duty to enforce these rules.

    Image Release

    Portions of this event may be filmed and/or photographed by Dance It UP, its agents, various media, or other third parties with organizer expressed permission. By entering this venue, you give Dance It UP the right to use, publish, reproduce, modify, adapt, and distribute your image at any time in any manner or medium. You agree that Dance It UP does not require your consent or approval of the finished product.

    No responsibility for loss or theft of articles left in changing rooms, ballrooms, hotel rooms, or other event facilities can be accepted by Dance It UP or USA Dance. Nor can Dance It UP or USA Dance be held liable for injury sustained by persons attending the event; it being hereby stated that persons attending the event do so at their own risk. All persons attending this event, whether as spectators, Athletes, officials, or guests of the organizer, shall be bound by the rules of USA Dance for those portions of the event sanctioned by the DanceSport Council. All Athletes may be subject to drug testing by the WDSF or USA Dance.

    General Guidelines

    Persons attending this DanceSport event, whether as spectators or as competitors, are bound by USA Dance rules. Participants of this event are obligated to adhere to these rules and may be asked to leave the ballroom and the competition at the discretion of the organizer if caught not obeying these rules. This includes the rules of good sportsmanship, and any competitor, coach, family member, or spectator who is asked to leave the competition because of poor behavior will not receive a refund for their tickets or entries. Competitors will also be disqualified and subject to disciplinary action.

    • No food or drink may be brought onto the dance floor.
    • NO DANCE AIDS such as soap flakes or dance wax may be placed on the dance floor, and no water or soda should be put on the floor/carpet by the on-deck area or the floor. Water or soda when used to wet down the soles of shoes are considered dance aids.
    • Amateur competitors must be members of USA Dance and in good standing. Amateur competitors participating in Youth National Qualifying Events must be competitive members of USA Dance. Competitors must be prepared to show proof of their current membership upon request.
